The Arabic script differs significantly from the Latin alphabet that English speakers are used to. It features 28 letters that are written differently, depending on where they appear in a word, and it is written from right to left. When you write in Arabic, it’s normally done in a cursive/script form, meaning that almost all the letters are connected and flow into each other. There are four forms that each letter can take:
- Initial (at the start)
- Medial (in the middle)
- Final (at the end)
- Isolated (all by itself)
The four various shapes exist to aid in the flow of information. It may appear to be a difficult task at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll notice how simple it is. Because the starting and medial shapes are so similar, and the isolation and final shapes are so similar, learning the shapes and connecting the letters in different sentences is rather simple. Mohamed Emadeldin Ibrahim Elshenawy is an Egyptian/Brazilian educator. He graduated from college in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in education and a minor in science.
